Public Services (Public Works)

The Department of Public Services (formerly Public Works) is a multi-faceted department comprised of many divisions and enterprise operations.

Department of Public Services Activities

  • Refuse Collection and disposal…garbage is collected twice each week from every home and light trash is collected weekly.

  • Sewage Collection and disposal…Sewage is collected from every occupied structure and transmitted to Miami-Dade County for treatment and disposal.

  • Potable Water transmission and fire hydrant maintenance…Our water is purchased from Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department and transmitted to every structure through a system of city owned and maintained pipes.

    • City's 2005 Water Quality Report (PDF) (HTML)

  • Maintenance of Public Buildings and Grounds, including tree trimming…Our crews in this division work hard to keep our City looking great everyday. Besides mowing grass and trimming trees in the city swales, they maintain seasonal flower beds throughout the city, adding a touch of color to our winding walkways and bike paths.

  • Maintenance of City vehicles…Every function listed above plus our Police operations depend on their vehicles to carry out their assigned tasks. This division makes sure our vehicles are in top shape and can withstand the stress placed on them daily.

  • Street, street lights, bike path and sidewalk maintenance…The quality of life in any community starts with the general appearance and smoothness of ingress and egress streets. At night, the quality of lighting of these roads is again of critical importance to our overall quality of life by helping to reduce crime.

  • Storm water management…Since 1991, Miami Springs has been adversely impacted by three October flood events. While we try to do everything in our power to respond to such disasters, most of our efforts are in the removal of standing water after the event. Our regular maintenance of storm drains and cleaning of canals helps us drain very well in normal rainfall conditions. Improvements to our drainage since 1996 have helped areas that once took weeks to drain are now dry within a few days.

  • In addition, with trained staff on hand, this department is involved daily in the protection of the City's tree canopy on private property. REMEMBER….ALWAYS check with the Public Services department before you cut any tree on your property. Some species and larger trees are protected by Miami Springs and Miami Dade County codes. These codes carry stiff fines for such improper trimming or removal. A FREE permit is required for such activity. When you receive the permit, you will also be given a brochure reminding of the proper techniques for pruning a tree.
